Jhola vs Liars Dice in Oscar Award
Nepali feature film Jhola and India’s hindi road drama Liar’s Dice will be competing for the Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards , aka the Oscars, which will be given away in Los Angeles, the US on February 22, 2015.

Jhola, based on the story by litterateur Krishna Dharawasi about the Sati culture, is the sixth Nepali movie entered in Oscar race. Sati culture was prevalent until the 1920s in Nepali society in which a wife would have to imolate herself upon her husband’s death on his funeral pyre.
Actress Garima Panta has played the role of a young women who marries a man double of her age who dies before her. As per the tradition, she puts herself on her husband’s funeral prye, but survives and hide herself from the society.
Jhola is directed and produced by Yadav Kumar Bhattarai.

On the other hand, 2013’s Hindi road drama, Liar’s Dice, written and directed by the actress turned director Geetu Mohandas will also be competing for the same title at Academy Award. It’s a coincidence, Liars Dice also feature a Nepali speaking actress from Darjeeling, Geetanjali Thapa as a protagonist. Movie features Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who is a national award winner actor beside the actress and the director.
Both movie is based on the story of women and related to Himalaya. And, both the movie features Nepali actresses in the lead roles. Unfortunately, it seems like both Nepali actresses are in the competition for the Academy Awards foreign language category.
P.S. Last year Nepali movie Soongava : the dance of Orchind was sent for the Academy Award.
